I’m super passionate about seeing racing drivers succeed and giving them the tools they need to find success. That passion has seen Racing Mentor go from strength to strength over the last four years.
But behind my passion for motorsport are a few other things. While passion helps me stay interested, it’s my ambition, determination and work ethic that keeps the business driving forward.
The thing is, without passion, none of those things would matter. People who start businesses they’re not passionate about don’t last long. The interest wanes pretty quickly, even if they are determined and hard-working.
I think passion can be enough to make you succeed. You might have to work out the other stuff as you go but it’ll be your passion that helps you develop your work ethic. When you’re so driven to see something succeed out of a love of a topic, cause, product or industry, you’ll probably work harder than you ever could to reach your goals.
So how the hell do you work out what you’re passionate about?
I think it comes from taking a step back from what you currently do. Ignore everything you know about the world. What do you love? And if you could do anything, what would it be?
I looked at what I was doing in my spare time (watching F1 and writing things) and looked at what really fulfilled me (hearing people’s wins). It wasn’t a quick process and I was an F1 journalist long before I started Racing Mentor but, eventually, all those things I loved fell into place together.
Once you’ve worked out what it is you love, make a plan, then sit down and do the work. Sure, you’ll have to work some stuff out as you go but your passion will keep you striving for the next level.
Social experiment
One thing that’s always worked well for me on social media is asking my audience to weigh in on what I’m working on. I might ask them about a design for a graphic, a title for a webinar, or even a small section of marketing copy. Not only does this give me an insight into what my audience wants but it gets them excited about what I’m working on and makes them feel part of that process.
I usually do this on my Facebook group but decided to try it on an Instagram story to encourage people to send me a message via the questions sticker. It worked really well and I have a bunch of people I can now message with an update when the webinar goes live.

📖 Read: You are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero — I recommend this book to pretty much everyone I meet (along with The Miracle Morning and Four-Hour Work Week). It’s a real game-changer when it comes to making money. Before I read it, I had no idea how bad my relationship with money was.
🎧 Listen: Challenged to think outside the box on the Sponsorship Podcast — In the latest episode of the Sponsorship Podcast, I was challenged to think outside of the box and come up with sponsorship ideas on the fly. While this is targetted at athletes, I think there are a few lessons that can be learned from the episode. It’s all about trusting yourself.
📺 Watch: Porsche 924 Race Car - Driven to Inspire by Paul Woodford — I interviewed Paul for my Behind the Wheel series of interviews. I love his presenting style and he’s super passionate about cars, which really comes across in what he does. This film is about one of my favourite race cars but it references some amazing work that’s being done in motorsport, too.
Win of the Week
I want you to share your wins with me. So please reply to this email and tell me what’s going well for you.
This week, I landed a small ghostwriting job. Nothing unusual about that, but this time, it’s writing spooky stories for a new website (actual ghost writing, if you will).
I LOVE horror and anything spooky so this is right up my alley. I’ve written a lot of fiction over the years and while I’ve got a couple of novels in progress and have released a short story, there’s something quite exciting about getting paid to flex my fiction muscles as part of my day-to-day work.
